FAQ

What is mental performance coaching?

I like to describe mental performance coaching as skill development. The same way you develop your physical, technical or tactical skills for your sport, mental skills help you become more adaptable to stress, adversity and change. We will work together to identify moments you can implement a mental skill, learn the skill and integrate it to your training or competition.

What happens on the discovery call?

A discovery call is a video call for a chance to meet. Ill ask about yourself or your athlete, their sport and what’s been getting in their way of performance. You’ll also have a chance to ask me anything about how I work. By the end of the call you will have a clearer idea of what you or your athlete can focus on and whether mental performance coaching is a good fit.

How long is the call? Do I need anything to prepare?

The call is about 20 minutes long.
No, there is nothing you need to prepare. Join the call with via phone, tablet or computer and I’ll take it from there.

Is there any pressure to sign up after the call?

No. The call is for both of us to figure out whether working together makes sense. If it does, I’ll walk you through how coaching works and what the next steps would be. If it doesn’t, or you just need time to think, that completely fine. You’ll still leave with a few ideas to start working on.

I am a parent looking for mental performance coaching for my kid. Can I schedule a discovery call?

Yes, absolutely. You can book the call yourself and join with your athlete.
One thing I ask is that the athlete is on board with the idea of meeting with me. Mental performance coaching works best when the athlete wants to be there, so I only work with athletes who are interested and bought in, not athletes who are pushed into it. This does not mean they have to be certain or have it all figured out. Being curious and open to conversation is enough.

How is mental performance coaching different from therapy?

Mental performance coaching focuses on performance. We work on skills like focus, confidence, handling pressure, bouncing back from mistakes, and on the standards and beliefs that shape how an athlete competes.

Therapy is a clinical service provided by licensed mental health professionals. It can focus on diagnosing and treating mental health conditions such as anxiety disorders or depression.

The two can overlap in topics, like stress, but not in purpose or scope. If during our work I think someone would benefit from therapy, I’ll say so and help them find the right support.

“Mental health as a student athlete is something I had been trying to manage by myself for years. Softball is almost as much a mental game as it is physical, so finding a good outlet was important for me to remain successful in my collegiate years. I sought help from David starting my sophomore year and I now find myself in his office every week. Not only was I learning ways to improve my mental game and mental health during the season, having someone like David who will listen to all my stress and worries was like a weight lifted off my shoulders. As a current senior, I can see how much my mental game has improved in softball, and even find myself using some techniques I learned in my everyday life as well. I have learned how to reframe the negative and unproductive thoughts almost every athlete experiences to positive, reaffirming ones that keep me focused at the plate. In a game like baseball/softball, when failing 7 out of 10 times can still get you to the big leagues, remaining mentally strong is so incredibly important to avoid burning out. I can see all the ways David has helped me keep loving the game despite the outcome. I would recommend his services to anyone, struggling or not, if you want to improve your mental health and success in your sport!”
