Hi all! Welcome to my first of many posts on the Improve Sport Performance blog. The purpose of this blog is to share some of my insights on mental performance and sport as I continue my journey as a mental performance coach. Each week I will try to touch on a topic I feel is important for athletes to understand, provide practical advice for performance, and share a little about what I have been up to in terms of performance psychology and practice.
Before we do all that, I would like to share a little bit more about myself than what you may have read in the “About Me” section of my website. This first post will be a deeper background about myself and my sporting experience.
My sport background is in wrestling. I wrestled in high school and had the privilege to wrestle in college. While I was never an amazing wrestler or received many accolades in college, I was always pushing myself in the practice room to try and achieve more. As most college athletes experience, I had my fair share of setbacks from injury, fear of failure, fear of reinjury, and competition anxiety. Unfortunately, performance and sport psychology resources were not available. After college and receiving my degree in psychology and after a few career changes, I discovered sport psychology and immediately dove into becoming the resource myself and many athletes I knew would have and can benefit from. After obtaining my master’s, I started my practice with the goal of making this resource more available to athletes.
While I have more aspirations as to how to make performance psychology services more accessible, I want to start by using this space along with social media to share resources with everyone.
To finish off this post, I want to share two quotes that I recently shared with college athletes.
- “True confidence comes from your belief in your ability to execute a skill.”
- “Be where your feet are. You can’t change the past. You can’t predict the future.”
Have a great week. I’ll be sure to elaborate on what these quotes mean in a future post.
